Phosphoric acid etching technics have been used for the bonding of composite resin
and enamel. By these technics, caries sensitivity will be increased due to the
decalcification and the reduced caries resistance. These problems could be solved by the
incorporation of fluorides into phosphoric acid etchant for the purpose of acid-resistance.
The purpose of this study was to confirm the effect of the incorporation of fluorides
into phosphoric acid etchant on the shear bond strength of composite to enamel treated.
Experimental tooth surface were flattened bovine central incisor labial surface. A
enchant for control group was a 37% phosphoric acid aqueous solution, and the etchants
for experimental groups were 37% phosphoric acid solutions containing the sodium
fluoride or stannous fluoride with the concentration of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%
perspectively. Shear bond strength after 24-hours were measured and surface
morphology were observed by SEM for each experimental groups. The following
conclusions were drawn.
1. Both of sodium fluoride and stannous fluoride showed the decreased shear bond
strength.
2. Effect of decreasing the shear bond strength was significant by the enchant
containing sodium fluoride.
3. Significant decrease of shear bond strength were occurred by the incorporation of
sodium fluoride at conrentratifn of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and stannous fluoride at 0.5%.
4. Sodium fluoride incorporation into phosphoric acid exhibited the poor acid etched
structure, and stannous fluoride formed the better structure for the bonding.
These results mean that although the incorporation of fluoride into Phosphoric acid
reduce the shear bond strength, stannous fluoride with concentrations at 0.25% or over
1% should be used for the minimum reduclion of shear bond strength.
